چکیده

We present results from a fully relativistic Monte Carlo simulation of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) in unmodified shocks. The computer code uses a single algorithmic sequence to smoothly span the range from nonrelativistic speeds to fully relativistic shocks of arbitrary obliquity, providing a powerful consistency check. While known results are obtained for nonrelativistic and ultra-relativistic parallel shocks, new results are presented for the less explored trans-relativistic regime and for oblique, fully relativistic shocks. We find, for a wide trans-relativistic range extending to shock Lorentz factors > 30, that the particle spectrum produced by DSA varies strongly from the canonical f(p) ∝ p spectrum known to result in ultra-relativistic shocks. Trans-relativistic shocks may play an important role in γ-ray bursts and other sources and most relativistic shocks will be highly oblique. Particle acceleration at shocks in relativistic jets

The theory of particle acceleration at shock fronts is briefly reviewed, with special emphasis on the production of the particles responsible for the nonthermal emission from blazars. The flat radio/IR spectra of these sources cannot be produced by diffusive acceleration at a simple nonrelativistic shock front propagating in a homogeneous medium. It can, however, be produced by a single unmodif...

Test-Particle Diffusive Shock Acceleration in Relativistic Shocks

Investigations of Lepton and Baryon Acceleration in Relativistic Astrophysical Shocks

Double, Glen Paul. Investigations of Lepton and Baryon Acceleration in Relativistic Astrophysical Shocks. (Under the direction of Donald C. Ellison.) Gamma-ray bursts, occurring randomly each day anywhere in the universe, may be the brightest objects in the sky during their short life. Particle acceleration in mildly relativistic shocks, internal to the main blastwave, may explain the early int...

Gamma-Ray Burst Prompt Emission: Implications from Shock Acceleration Theory

The principal paradigm for gamma-ray bursts suggest that the prompt transient gamma-ray signal arises from multiple shocks internal to the relativistic expansion. This paper illustrates some properties of diffusive acceleration at relativistic shocks that pertain to GRB models, providing interpretation of the BATSE/EGRET data. Using a standard Monte Carlo simulation, computations of the spectra...

Cosmic Ray Acceleration at Relativistic Shock Waves

Theory of the first-order Fermi acceleration of cosmic ray particles at relativistic shock waves is reviewed. We consider shocks with parallel and oblique, suband super-luminal magnetic field configurations and with finite-amplitude magnetic field perturbations. A role of oblique field configurations and field perturbations in forming the cosmic ray energy spectrum and changing the acceleration...
